The problem

Flood screening tends to happen late — after a site is acquired or an alignment is fixed — when the remaining options are expensive engineering rather than a different location.

Publicly available hazard mapping in India is fragmented across states and agencies, and rarely at a resolution or in a format a design office can use directly.

Linear assets make this worse. A road or a line is only as available as its most exposed kilometre, and that kilometre is easy to miss on a site-by-site check.

    Screening a long list of candidate sites

    Site selection / land team

    Twenty candidate parcels, and flood risk is not yet part of the shortlisting criteria because checking each one is slow.

    Checking a route or corridor

    Highway / rail alignment

    An alignment crosses several catchments and the exposure is not uniform along it.

    2. Identify the exposed segments rather than treating the route as one object
    3. Use those segments to target detailed hydraulic study and drainage design

What this data will not do

A 30 m screening layer is not a design flood level. Use it to compare options and to decide where detailed hydraulic modelling is warranted — not as the basis for a structural design. In steep terrain the modeled depth is least reliable, and we flag those states explicitly.

We publish the limits next to the numbers. A risk map that hides its own weaknesses isn’t a public good.
